Such an evocative phrase! The guy is being pilloried, predictably and (I think) a little unfairly. It's one thing to oppose abstinence-only education, another thing altogether to oppose any discussion of abstinence (which is how some of the clown-bashing reads, to me anyway).

Slightly off-topic, but there ought to be an "abstinence clown" variant on the shaggy dog story about the verbally abusive clown.

A Star Tribune photo of sad, blonde Vikings fans after their 1998 playoff loss to Atlanta is now in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The newspaper's hard-boiled sports columnist has written a "ten years later" piece about them, complete with a reunion photo.

A commenter on that column writes that the loss was a blessing in disguise, as the team would likely have lost its fifth Super Bowl to Denver had it gotten past Atlanta.

... from the Timberwolves and Lynx. Features slightly creepy Flash animation. That's Al Jefferson doing the deep bass YEAHs, which made me laugh out loud. Sadly, the good-natured atmosphere is in stark contrast with the troubles these franchises have had on the court.

In an upcoming interview with Katie Couric to be aired this week, Sarah Palin is unable to name any Supreme Court Case other than Roe v. Wade.

The Rules: Post info about ONE completely fictitious Supreme Court decision, modern or historic, to your lj. The more spontaneous, the better.

In Pecan Tree vs. 12, Chief Justice Earl Warren ruled on a lawsuit in which a pecan tree from Oklahoma was suing the number 12 for copyright infringement. An appellate judge had awarded 3 billion adverbs to the tree in punitive damages. But lawyers for the number 12 appealed, indicating that it was 1957 and the notion of limerence had not been invented yet, much less by the pecan tree, so how could they be suing 12 for using it. The tree's lawyers argued that limerence existed--in fact, the pecan tree felt it for Warren. The defense claimed that no one would recognize the concept without having a word for it. Felix Frankfurter wrote a powerful dissenting opinion invoking the Sapir-Worf hypothesis, but Warren, clearly touched by the pecan tree's affections, ruled in favor of the tree and even added a thousand prepositions to the award.

I confess that I don't know very many at all, myself. Here are a small number that I won't mention, except through the magic of paraleipsis )

I remember a few sound bites about Marbury vs. Madison from high school: Written by Chief Justice John Marshall. Established the doctrine of judicial review. Marshall ruled that the court couldn't rule on the case. I remember having a hard time wrapping my mind around the idea that, by making a ruling limiting its own power, the court in fact was extending its power.

That's a tall order, I'm afraid. My favorite line from the article:
While reports of dogs biting humans aren't that unusual, Niziolek said a case like Rice's is a first, even for more seasoned animal control officers.

    • Speaking of which: I recently had the experience of playing NBA Live on a Playstation. It was most impressive. I particularly enjoyed the seamless weaving together of quotes by Marv Albert and Steve Kerr, even when they were speaking disparagingly of my team defense.
  • Not basketball:  Have I mentioned that I lost the game? Since Plotkin and Kerr (Peg, not Steve) have also lost this game, I'm in good company.

For those who saw The Big Lebowski: the straight-faced cowboy character who introduces the story is known as "the Stranger," and he was played by Sam Elliott. The blogger known as Cinetrix was reminded of that movie when she saw Elliott in The Golden Compass; apparently he stole the show for her. Now she asks:

... wouldn't almost every movie be improved by the startling and unexpected appearance of the Stranger? Imagine, say, The Seventh Seal. "'Course I ain't never been to London, and I ain't never seen France. And I ain't never seen no queen in her damned undies, so the feller says. But I'll tell you what, Death. I reckon I kin play some chess with you."

Go on. Try it for yourself. Pick any movie and parachute [or, if you want to get all film studies about it, "suture"] the Stranger into the midst of it. Be sure to share your results in the comments.

Have at it!

So people are doing this thing involving a list of "the 106 books most often marked 'unread' by users of LibraryThing (as of today)." Some versions of the meme specify "today" as September 30, but others seem not to bother taking "today" literally. They post a copy of the list, marking up the ones they've read, the ones they started but didn't finish, and the ones they couldn't stand.

I tend to view top-N lists with skepticism, and this one seems particularly odd to me. Why 106? And what's so significant about being marked 'unread' by users of LibraryThing? I'm guessing that it just happened to produce an interesting and eclectic list of books. I think my biggest complaint is that the "read it/didn't finish/couldn't stand it" information says very little about a person.

My favorite versions of the meme are ones where the blogger has additional annotations, such as "saw the movie version." I won't actually copy out the 106 books myself, but I would like to suggest some other (overlapping) markup categories. They are probably suited for a different set of books, but they might make for more revealing/confessional blogging:
  1. Books that I thought were great in school but now do nothing for me
  2. Books that I hated in school but now like
  3. Books that I read the Cliffs Notes for
  4. Books that make me feel smart for having read them
  5. Books that make me feel dumb for having read them
  6. Books that make me feel dumb for having not read them
  7. Books that make me feel smart for having not read them
  8. Books that are supposed to be Deep and Important, but I read them like I would read a romance novel
  9. Books that I read but missed the point of entirely
  10. Books that I read and that everyone else missed the point of entirely
  11. It goes on ... )

Somehow this particular lolcat is sticking with me. It's my mini-obsession of the moment. The kitty's expression is fascinating, and I like the refreshingly awkward "I are."

One of my favorite jokes used to take place at Southern Methodist University. But now, a recent strain has it taking place at The University of Phoenix. Never mind that that's an online university, making it even more impossible for each student to pair off with the person sitting to their immediate right. The joke has also been updated so that participants email their contributions to each other.

you really get back what you feel you deserve. Meanwhile you have a cult-like following

openly, no matter of the criticism. You love
things that a magnificent and quiet. The cold
is your favorite thing because you never change
when faced with a difficult situation or
inquiry. A quick thinker, and a philosopher,
you spend your afternoons trying to solve world
hunger. You love testing yourself to new limits
and being faced with new challenges to
overcome. You aren't much of a risk-taker, and
you always try to do what's right. You fear
being helpless and faced with a situation you
have no control over. You value endurance of
the body and the mind. When you leave this

in college years ago, i read and enjoyed ``the nose,'' a short story by gogol. and now that story is in the news. highlights from http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/2291483.stm :
A statue of a giant nose in St Petersburg, inspired by Gogol's story of a man's pursuit of his escaped nose, has also vanished.

Police in Russia's second city are hunting the thieves responsible for the removal of the 100kg marble piece.

It was erected eight years ago to honour Nikolai Gogol for his popular but surreal 19th Century short story. In it a civil servant's nose detaches itself and he has to pursue it all over the city as it conducts a bizarre walkabout.

"The nose seems to have gone for a walk," said its sculptor Vyacheslav Bukhayev.

... Mr Bukhayev said he was already considering whether and how to craft a replacement for the stolen nose. "Maybe it's for the best. In Gogol's story, the nose has a birthmark which I omitted in my sculpture.

"In my second nose, I will be more faithful to the story and add the birthmark," he said.

... but this particular quiz is at just about the right level of irony for me. i bet that, in 2040 or so, i'll look back on this entry and sigh at my youthful optimism and naivete.
best of all, once i got the results of this quiz, the website prefaced the relevant HTML code with: "In case (for reasons we can't imagine) you wanted to post your results somewhere, here's a code you can copy: ...".

i'm guessing that the reasons people do copy out their quiz results and put them online, have at least a little to do with the idea of distinguishing oneself from everyone else out there. e.g.: i'm an angry spork-throwing wildebeest, rather than the ATTACK BANANA or a fatigued ladybug resting on a tacky floral throw pillow. see? i'm not just another sheep in the herd!

i wonder whether there's a quiz out there that has only one possible conclusion. i bet there is, someplace.
